My travel MVPs: What I keep packing again and again
The upgraded, edited, and still-worthy essentials in my suitcase
Last year’s travel essentials list became my most-read article of all time. But I’ve traveled a lot since then, and I’ve learned even more. So I rebuilt it from the ground up: new picks, smarter swaps, and honest opinions on what’s actually worth packing (and what isn’t). If you’ve ever stood over your suitcase wondering what makes the cut, this list is for you.
As I said last year: Travel is one of the biggest investments we make—not just in money, but in energy and time. And I’ve found that having the right products on hand can be the difference between a chaotic trip and one that feels calm and enjoyable. Losing a suitcase wheel in the middle of the airport can ruin a trip. So can a toiletry bottle that explodes shampoo all over your clothes in transit. Please know: my recommendations aren’t about creating the most aesthetic packing list, they’re about making your trip as seamless and enjoyable as possible. Every item here is based on real personal experience and tried-and-true testing.
And since this guide is going live right in the middle of Prime Day season, the timing couldn’t be better: My favorite TSA-compliant toiletry case is 20% off, my take-everywhere portable charger is 17% off, and the neck pillow I recommend to every economy flier is currently 30% off. So if you’re looking to upgrade your kit, this is the perfect time to do it.
Read on for:
The luggage I rely on (and what finally convinced me to upgrade after a decade)
The organizers that actually keep my suitcase neat, and save space doing it
The tech that solves real travel problems, from dead batteries to lost bags
The wellness products that make long flights feel more manageable (and even restful)
Built-in travel tips throughout: how I use each item, what it replaced, and what I’ve learned the hard way
So you know what’s changed from last year’s list, here’s a key to refer to:
(still a favorite) — An item that was on last year’s list
(upgraded) — Replaced an item from last year’s list
(new) — A net-new item
(longtime staple) — Was not on last year’s list, but have been using for at least a year or more
Built to last: The luggage I swear by
Away Everywhere Tote (still a favorite), $155 — Touted as my favorite travel product of all time. It’s my dedicated hand carry for every long-haul flight. I’ve had it for three years now and it still looks new, thanks to the easy-to-clean material. Favorite features: not bulky on shoulder, has a trolley sleeve and key leash, and easily fits under a seat.
Away “The Large” Checked Suitcase (upgraded), $375 — After having my last checked luggage for ten years, I had a big decision to make when it came time to upgrade. I landed on this, and six months and several flights in, I’m more than satisfied with my purchase. Sleek, durable, and surprisingly lightweight. It reminds me of when I got a new 2020 vehicle after only ever driving a used 2002. So many nice new features and upgrades!
